Funny Cat Pictures: Lolcat "An I has not eated it . . ." Whether beginning in the 1970's or in 2005, the lolcat phenomenon is sweeping internet image libraries and cat lovers sites and minds alike. With more images than theories and more theories than facts, a few things are clear about lolcats (and their command of English isn't always one of them). The best way to clarify? Over time: In or around 1970, a poster began to circulate that depicted a cat hanging from a rope with the caption, "Hang in there, baby!" Lolcats lay quiet for the next thirty-five years until the appearance of the Caturday graphic. For all we know, though, we could be jabbering on in lolspeak without you having the faintest idea of what any of this means. Let's pause for a moment. What, you ask, is a lolcat? With the easy distribution of stock photography that has sprung into being through the internet, images of all sorts have been climbing in popularity. Of these, perhaps one of the chiefest subjects of fun is the cat graphic. Cute cats, ugly cats, fun cats, boring cats-all have found their way onto the Internet. The common Internet abbreviation "LOL" (for "laugh out loud") has attached itself to cat (hence, "lolcat") as the result of a recent trend, resurrecting the rope-hanging kitty of the disco days. The "Caturday" graphic of a lazy cat waiting for Saturday helped kick off the trend when it got picked up by the 4chan imageboard in 2005. "Caturday.com" was registered on April 30, 2005, and "Lolcats.com" was registered on June 14, 2006. The trend, however, really kicked off in 2007, with the January 11 posting of the first image on icanhascheezburger.com, a lolcat of the same caption. While lolcats generally feature a cat in a particular action with a caption that highlights something comical about the scene, the lolrus (featuring an elephant seal) and the O RLY? owl have both joined the lolspeak image craze with their own variations. In one of the most significant offshoots to date, a group has begun to translate the Christian Bible into lolspeak. This LOLcat Bible features the Ceiling Cat-originally a graphic of a cat looking from a hole in the ceiling meant to be synonymous with God in the lolcat world-and is guaranteed to bring laughs. The translation of Genesis 1:1 reads: "Oh hai. In teh beginnin Ceiling Cat maded teh skiez An da Urfs, but he did not eated dem." As the chapter progresses, Ceiling Cat says "i can has MOAR living stuff, mooes, An creepie tings, AN otehr aminals. It happen so tehre" until the glorious end, that "Ceiling Cat sayed, Beholdt, teh good enouf for releaze as version 0.8a. kthxbai" As for us, we have to leave you, too. Cat images are better seen than discussed, but this brief history ought to add more lolz to your cats. O RLY? you say. Heck yez, we say. Kthxbai.
